Del Potro saves Argentina in Davis Cup semis

09/21/2008 - Buenos Aires, Argentina (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Juan Martin del Potro played the role of hero for Argentina, as his straight-set victory over Russia's Igor Andreev prevented a huge collapse and sent the host country into the Davis Cup final for the third time.

Del Potro, among the hottest players on the ATP Tour, rolled to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 victory after the Russians had squared the best-of-five semifinal tie behind Nikolay Davydenko's victory over David Nalbandian in Sunday's opening reverse singles rubber.

The Argentines will next host the Davis Cup final against Spain from November 21-23. Spain advanced to the title set with a 4-1 victory over the defending champion United States earlier Sunday.

Argentina had opened a 2-0 lead on Friday behind straight-set singles victories from Nalbandian and del Potro, but Russia's doubles tandem of Dmitry Tursunov and Igor Kunitsyn kept the visitors alive with a dramatic five-set win on Saturday. The Russians gutted out a 6-2, 6-1, 6-7 (9-11), 3-6, 8-6 triumph over Guillermo Canas and Nalbandian.

Playing a third straight day may have impacted Nalbandian, who won the first set on Sunday then appeared to run out of gas after he couldn't prevail in the third-set tiebreaker.

Del Potro, though, came to the rescue. He broke serve in the very first game and never trailed in the match, at one point winning nine straight games bridging the second and third sets.

The 19-year-old del Potro has had a banner summer, winning four straight ATP titles. He has won 25 of his last 26 matches, losing only to Andy Murray in the U.S. Open quarterfinals.

Argentina improved to 2-3 against Russia in Davis Cup play, which included a loss at Moscow in the 2006 final. The Argentines have never won the championship, also finishing as the runner-up to the United States in 1981.

In addition to its 2006 Davis Cup final victory against Argentina, Russia also captured the title in 2002 and finished as last year's runner-up to the U.S.
